At the Perl QA Hackathon, I and others were constantly tripping over how to pronounce CPXXXAN — David Cantrell's family of platform-specific or Perl version-specific subsets of CPAN.

Some people suggested we pronounce it "spandex" for some reason, but that's already a better fit for Chris Williams' CPANIDX modules.

Only on the final night did I realize the right thing to do is to play off the "XXX" in the name and just pronounce it "SexPAN".

This is why we can't have nice things.

    I second Len's comment. -_-

I can see no good coming from incorporating the word 'sex' into the name of a repository.

On the other hand, if you map the X to the Z sound as in XANADU, with some imagination, it could be pronounced as see-paisan ... see, CPXXXAN is your friend.

Wouldn't XPAN be a better ambigunym for this class of CPANs?

It would. Particularly since it's no longer "Comprehensive". :-)

Maybe suggest it to David Cantrell?

I've always found an easy solution to be to pronounce it "DrHyde's crack".

    It's a shame I couldn't join you all. What cpxxxan-ish discussions did I miss?

It came up a lot in the discussion of how older Perl's will cope with the toolchain moving to target 5.8.X. It would have been much easier to say "they can use Cantrell's SexPAN" instead of "they can use Cantrell's 'cee', 'pee', ...uh... 'ex', 'ex', 'ex', 'a', 'en'".

As mentioned above, I'd be happy to have you rename it "XPAN" since it's not really "comprehensive" anymore. :-)

That’s a good point actually, how about “VPAN”? (As in “versioned-Perl Archive Network”.)

That risks a pronunciation collision with the 6PAN. :-P

The "comprehensive" in CPAN means that it's everyone's code in one place, instead of everyone's stuff scattered at random over the interweb. That said, I am happy to rename it. I think I prefer VPAN to XPAN, as XPAN is just as similar sounding to 6PAN as sexpan is. Vote now!

But how about sadpan, for Sliced And Diced :-)
